Prince Albert Western Cape Winner "Dorp van die Jaar"

August 2012

Hi to all our Guests, family and Friends,

The nail biting & anxious waiting is finally over . . . as we spring into Spring in the Karoo.

KAROO VIEW COTTAGES Congratulates Sabie & Lady Grey for taking 1st & 2nd place in the Dorp van die Jaar 2012 competition and PRINCE ALBERT for coming in 3rd out of 9 WELL DONE TO ALL! ! !

Richard & Julie would like to thank each & everyone who participated and showing their support by voting, many of whom sent 10, 20 & 30 sms’s, & even though Prince Albert did not come out "Tops" in the voting we have decided to go ahead with our 3rd Karoo View Lucky Draw "3 night’s accommodation for 2" to show our appreciation to all of you who voted and because we know that Prince Albert is the best. A Big Big Thank you!

And the Lucky Winners were. MARTIE & ROUAN BESTER from Kuilsrivier

Who had 30 tickets in our lucky draw Well Done & Thank You. We look forward to welcoming you back to Prince Albert & Karoo View Cottages.

For interest the final results were as follows:

Sabie: 71 902 , Lady Grey: 64 677, Prins Albert: 62 759, Clarens: 49 184, Walvisbaai: 47 643, Schweizer-Reneke: 14 680, Hoedspruit: 11 794, St. Lucia: 8 006, Kathu: 7 386.

These figures are absolutely amazing (Last year De Rust won with only 39 000 votes) but you will see that Prince Albert was only just behind Lady Grey – ahhh such a pity, as we all know that Prince Albert is THE BEST DORP IN THE LAND With such a diversity of "offerings" for everyone, young & old, big & small.

Also remember that Prince Albert is celebrating 250 years And each month Prince Albert continues to offer loads of different activities for all. So why not plan a few days away to come & join in the fun As the Karoo comes alive in a blaze of colour.

Our winter rains have continued, as has the cold, but thank goodness for our log fireplaces in our house and cottages, which have kept us all snug as bugs, but the good news is that Spring has Sprung and our natural Koppie is coming alive. Each and every day we awake to a new delight! The purple haze of the different fygies, the yellows and oranges of the Namaqualand daisy’s and other veld flowers are now showing their magnificent faces and even though our Aloe Ferox’s are still blooming, our other aloes are now beginning to show their flowers.

Spring in the Karoo is a sight to behold wherever the eye can see

Some of our beauties on our Koppie, showing the diversity of nature that Richard and I are so lucky to live with each and every day.

A really very special delight . . . last year the Familiar Chats built their nest on our back stoep & have recently returned, and built a 2nd nest. You will notice the little stones at the base with the softer material on top which is fascinating – not too dissimilar to the natural rock walls in the Swartberg. 1 Mommy has had some chicks and is now as busy as a bee with feeding & the 2nd one is now sitting and so we wait to see the next lot of chicks.

A couple of months ago we were very fortunate to have Dr Anton Odendal, Chairman Birdlife Overberg, come and stay with us as he was putting together a Karoo Birding Route – please visit www.westerncapebirding.co.za/karoo/routes.php where you can read all about the various routes and destinations that he has covered and put together as well as the list of sightings that he made, which is awesome and I am sure will be of interest to all our "birders’ out there.

We will also be receiving printed brochures for our keen birders when they come and stay in our area.

Another interest that makes Prince Albert No 1 and yet another reason for you to visit our special dorp. "The Prince Albert area represents the prime birding spot in the Karoo" quote from Anton Odendal.

Some Karoo View News to end off with: Today we received our annual renewal for 4 STAR GRADING. Thanks to Richard, Ricardo and Greg for all the hard work in ensuring that we achieved this yet again.

We would like to thank all our guests as we have recently been notified by TRIP ADVISOR that KAROO VIEW COTTAGES are Top Ranked under SPECIALITY LODGING in PRINCE ALBERT, so thank you to all our guests who have taken time to send in their reviews which we appreciate.

We have also achieved MOST POPULAR ACCOMMODATION IN PRINCE ALBERT for 2011, by Travel Ground, so again thank you to all our guests who have contributed to this.

Take care and stay warm Julie, Richard, Ricardo, Greg, Jock, Spot, Cleo and Misty And we hope to be able to welcome you back to PRINCE ALBERT and KAROO VIEW COTTAGES In the not too distant future.

View from our cottages stoep overlooking the village of Prince Albert and the Swartberg & Jock taking pride of place, as usual.
